Rafael Fernando Gutierrez Jr. was born in 1985 in the U.S. in the state of Georgia. He is a first year MFA candidate in Studio Art (transmedia) at The University of Texas in Austin. Rafael earned his BFA Studio Art (new media) from The University of Texas at San Antonio 2015. A major theme in his work revolves around an introspective performance that outwardly reimagines the hyper visibility and invisibility of the black/brown body in a digital and post-internet landscape. His current body of work experiments with digital fabrication of Black/Brown cultural signifiers and aesthetics and speculates the possibilities of post-Internet colonialism. Rafael is interested in questioning the transformative qualities of artificiality through mimetic discourse, digital performance, augmented reality, manipulation of petroleum-based byproducts. His studio practice investigates the materiality of memory and explores the possibilities of sitespecificity to create spaces within spaces.
