Soma

Since 2010, SOMA Summer has offered a series of short seminars and workshops led by a selection of renowned Mexican and international artists and curators. A number of guided visits to museums and artists’ studios are scheduled. Participants also have the possibility of meeting weekly for individual critiques and conversations with a variety of artists and curators. This six-week intensive program is topic-specific; topics change from year to year. SOMA Summer culminates in an open studio/lecture event where participants present the development of their work.

SOMA offers shared studio spaces at its location. All studios have wireless internet access. SOMA assists those attending the program with finding affordable production in Mexico City, regardless of medium or method.

Online applications will be accepted until Sunday April 15th, 2012. However, the size of the group is limited to thirty participants. The application review process begins March 1st, 2012.

SOMA Summer 2012

SOMA Summer 2012 will take place from July 02 to August 11, 2012.

This summer’s topic considers the transformation of labor in artistic practice from the Second World War to the present. Seminars and workshops will help the group reflect on the shift from a manufacturing to service economy in developed countries as well as new definitions of labor that have extended beyond all national boundaries.

SOMA Summer participants will revisit the legacy of conceptual art as a mode of production, the role of craft in contemporary art practices, and the pertinency of learning technical skills in art education. The group will also explore the possibilities of alternative economies, and look closely at the ways in which artists participate in decentralized, global networks of production.

All program activities will be in english.

International artist residency programs continue to be a stepping stone in the development of an artist’s practice. Typically, such residencies operate as sites for uninterrupted artistic production. In contrast to this dominant model, SOMA Summer has established an intensive structured six-week program that situates discourse and critical thinking at its nucleus.  This summer’s participants have been invited based on how the principles of “appropriation” relate to their practices. The aim is to reflect on the efficacy of the methods of the ”pictures generation” today and to consider current discussions on remix culture, the copy, and re-enactment.

While this structured setting provides artists a context for new lines of thought, as well as the freedom to test different methodologies, the question of how to display work that is in a state of progress will be central to this summer’s ”open-studio.” That is, how does the presentation and lack of contextualization that is often endemic to simply “opening the studio” affect an audience’s experience? In an effort to avoid the traps of aestheticising research, viewers will encounter a visual framing that creates temporal and psychic connections between the participants’ previous and more resolved work and new lines of thought that have been developed during this summer.

Participants: Aoibheann Greenan (Irland), Benjamin Tong  (Canada), Bill Abdale (United States), Christina Ochoa (Colombia), Clarissa Tossin (Brasil), Claudia Peña (Mexico – United States), Dana Maiden (United States),  Daniel Bejar (United States), Daniel Aguilar (Mexico), Daniela Huerta (Mexico), Domingo Castillo (United States), Federico Martinez (Mexico), Jennifer Nichols  (United States), Jill Frank (United States), Juliana Bittencourt (Brasil), Kimberlee Córdova (United States), Martin Roth (Austria), Natalia Rebelo (Brasil), Nuria Montiel (Mexico), Pablo Ángel Lugo (Mexico), Raquel De Anda (United  States), Rosa Sijben (The Netherlands), Sara Baruch (United States), Susana Reisman (Venezuela), Susana Rodriguez (Mexico), Szu-Han Ho (United States), Ximena Díaz (Colombia)
